How to Get a Picture You'll Actually Want to Send

Every year, sometime around October, families across Tampa start thinking the same thing: we really need to get a holiday card photo this year.

And then the mental spiral begins. What do we wear? Where do we go? What if the kids won't cooperate? What if it's hot? Spoiler: it's probably going to be hot. If you've been putting off booking a session because the whole thing feels more stressful than it's worth, I want to talk you out of that. A holiday card photo that actually feels like your family (the real one, not the staged-and-stiff version) is absolutely possible. It just takes a little bit of the right preparation and a willingness to let go of the rest.

The Holiday Card Photo Problem Nobody Talks About

Here's what I see happen a lot: a family shows up with a clear picture in their heads of what this is supposed to look like. Everyone coordinated, everyone smiling, everyone looking at the camera at the same time. And when real life doesn't cooperate (because it rarely does), the session starts to feel like a performance nobody rehearsed for.

I once had a family show up to a winter session in full sweaters and cozy layers. They'd planned ahead, which I genuinely love... except this is Florida, and that particular day landed at a solid 80 degrees. This sweet family just powered through it, sweaters, heat, and all….and honestly, we made the best of it and laughed afterwards. I'm pretty sure that story comes up every year, when they start planning for their next session, because we made some core memories that day.

That's the thing about holiday card sessions here in Tampa. The ones that really land aren't the ones where everything went according to plan. They're the ones where the family showed up ready to be together and the rest just happened around them.

What Actually Makes a Holiday Photo Worth Sending

I've always loved the holiday cards that show a family doing something….on a trip, at the beach, piled together on a blanket somewhere. The ones where you can get a sense of who they really are,, not just see their outfits.

The cards I end up staring at the longest are the ones that make me feel the connection between them. The ones where the dad is playing with his kids and laughing or the mom has the most beautiful smile on her face because she’s snuggling with her baby.

So when I think about what separates a holiday photo a family loves from one they just settle for, it comes down to this: does it feel like them?Is there connection, energy, some kind of real feeling happening in the frame? Or is everyone just standing there, proving they exist?

Maybe snuggling on a blanket is not your family’s thing (and that’s okay!). But if you and your family are normally playful, wouldn’t you want a holiday card that showcases that?

What to Actually Do Before Your Session

1. Relax and let the kids play

This is the big one. I wish I could tell every family before they book: your kids running around and playing is going to produce better photos than if they sat perfectly still and smiled on command. I promise.

The best sessions I've ever had are the ones where the parents showed up with zero threats and zero expectations and the kids were just allowed to be kids. Exploring, goofing around, climbing on things, doing their thing. That's where the real pictures live.

The photos that last (ie. the ones you look at in twenty years and feel something) are almost never the ones where everyone was behaving perfectly.

2. Think about location like it's part of the story

Tampa has some genuinely beautiful spots for outdoor family sessions - open fields, waterfront areas, parks with great natural light. Think about where your family actually likes to be. A location that fits your family's vibe will always outperform a "pretty" spot that feels random to you.

3. Dress for the Florida reality

I say this with full love and zero judgment after watching a family sweat through sweaters in 80 degree heat: check the forecast and then assume it will be warmer than that. Light layers, breathable fabrics and colors that feel like you will always serve you better than outfits chosen purely for the aesthetic. 4. Let go of the idea that it needs to be perfect

The messy hair, the kid who wouldn't smile, the little one who decided to sit down in the middle of the field…those are the moments that become the story. These photos aren't just about what your family looks like. They're about who you are as people. That's worth holding onto.

Why This All Actually Matters

A holiday card is such a small thing on the surface. A little rectangle of paper that lands in a mailbox and gets displayed on the mantel for two weeks before the world moves on. But the photo inside it? That's a snapshot of your family exactly as you are right now. This height, this age, this chapter in your family’s story.

Time moves fast. I know that sounds like something everyone says, but I mean it in the most specific way possible: the version of your family that exists this December won't exist next December. Someone will be taller. Someone will have lost a tooth or started a new school or decided they're too old to hold hands in photos (they're not, by the way… I'll work with that).

Getting a photo that actually looks like your family, that feels joyful and real and true, is worth doing well. And it doesn't have to be stressful to get there.
